Ones are the keepers of rules. As part of the instinctual sector or ‘anger group’, Ones are natural leaders and often embrace causes and promote them as the path to salvation. John Lennon’s ‘Give Peace a Chance’ is an example of a One promoting a cause, as is Gandhi and his non-violent protests. Ones are morality explorers and are typically 'do-gooders' who want to teach you the right way to do something. Everything a person does falls somewhere along the spectrum of that which is right and that which is wrong in the One's world view.
The ideal for a One is a perfect world. Many Ones will take up religion, human rights, politics—anything that affects the human condition. Ones seek to make the world a better place to live. Their rules and systems are designed to improve life as we know it and are based upon principles of freedom for all.
While fighting to better the world, Ones create a very profound problem. They find the messiness of human life to be truly disturbing. They usually attend to their ideals more than they pay attention to their own their physical well-being and they tend to be martyrs. Their avoidance of their own personal needs offers them tremendous drive, but also makes them excessively angry and impatient. Beneath their passionate anger about injustice in the world lies a profound anger and hurt about sacrificing their own needs and well-being for others.
Ones often use the word 'should'. You might picture a One shaking their finger at you. They often try to regiment things like eating, sexuality and manners. They might be out championing the underdog but internally they are beating themselves up for eating too much or wanting more pleasure in their life. Ones tend to live in a world of feast or famine; they are either overindulging or restricting themselves entirely.
England with all its protocol and regality is a One culture (in combination with 4). Holland— a country that passionately believes in human freedom within rigid boundaries—is also a One culture, as is Switzerland, the neutral land that sits above all of the warring countries as a sanctuary for freedom.
In NLP terms, Ones tend to be internally referenced and run the metapattern of switch. They are often auditory and don’t like being in control, but know that it is their obligation to be.
